Gomuta , which means memory, is a reflection of Sabandar’s childhood memories of his grandparents’ village, Legoretta, in the Basque Country. Each image is a personal effort to capture the environment, culture, camaraderie and undying drive of the teenagers who are trying to keep the sport of Jai Alai alive. A unique blend of lacrosse and squash, this traditional sport once reverberated through the streets as the region’s most beloved pastime. Although it gained international fame in the 20th century, its vibrant legacy has waned, leaving only a few hundred players in the Basque Country to carry on the sport. Their passion is breathing life back into the aging frontones; the arenas where the sport once thrived.
